Michael Waysmith lives in the beautiful city of Wanganui in the lower North Island of New Zealand, currently working out of the public access hotshop at the Wanganui Glass School.
Waysmith specialises in the medium of Glass, a unique medium because it can colour, shape, bend and reflect light. In its purest form as clear glass it is invisible, seen only by its effect on the light that passes through it. Waysmith is intrigued by the limitless possibilities that exist in using colour and pattern via cane and murrine. As the artist describes: "The process of consciously composing complex and intricate tessellating patterns in two dimensions, before expanding these into a three dimensional blown form is breathtaking and exhilarating at the same time."
Waysmith is inspired by musical analogies, finding the colour spectrum to be like an octave, and individual colours are like musical notes. The artist finds that when consciously arranged in a harmonious composition, beautiful music for the eyes can arise in glass via the interplay of light with pattern, colour and form.
Black Door Gallery is proud to exhibit the stunning and technically finessed glass works of this talented contemporary artist.
