From tactile clay to opulent forms- the artworks in this exhibition trace a path from raw, malleable earthly material to refined, luxurious shapes.
For ceramic artists, the journey always begins with the humble origins of clay. The challenge lies in transforming this material through techniques such as throwing, building, firing, and glazing to achieve a compelling result—where the original pliable clay is transmuted and presented in a new vision. In his latest series, Alchemy, Peter Collis aimed to elevate his clay creations to emphasise light and surface. With meticulous craftsmanship, he carefully shapes the core of his sculptural pieces, then applies lustrous, iridescent 22ct gold and platinum glazes that alter the clay's look to mirror or metal. Through the strategic use of convex and concave base forms, Collis structures his pieces to enhance the interplay of light. The alchemy inherent in this process serves as a reminder that beauty and refinement can emerge from the most elemental materials or unassuming origins.
