ANN SKELLY
Ann Skelly is a Waiheke based artist who creates compelling landscape and seascape paintings with a focus on colour, light and form. Influenced by the beauty of nature that surrounds her studio, she aims to capture the ever-changing moods of the natural environment around her.
The ocean is of particular focus for Skelly, a subject she approaches in acrylic on canvas at varying scales- from intimate to statement sized. Skelly builds her scenes with careful attention to layering and detail, crafting her compositions until they evoke a sense of connectedness with the ocean. From tranquil seas to dramatic crashing waves, Skelly seeks to express the rhythm and sublime energy of the ocean on her canvas. A love of art began for Skelly from childhood in the UK, where she later earned a Bachelor of Arts and Design with a focus on ceramics. But it was New Zealand's stunning landscapes that truly inspired her, prompting a move to these shores in 1987. Since then, Skelly has built a following for her work across the mediums of painting, illustration and ceramic design. Skelly spent time working full time at Weta Workshop, the renowned Wellington-based design studio, and moved from there to spend more time in her own studio focusing on her painting. She has exhibited in numerous group shows and has work in private collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. Skelly was awarded as a SoHo Art Prize Finalist 2024. She exhibits her work at Black Door Gallery and select Australian galleries. |
