BRITTANY WALKER SMITH
Brittany Walker Smith is a Doctoral candidate at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, whose work embraces frivolity as both a playful escape and a powerful response to life’s inevitable struggles.
Turning away from the starkness of minimalism, Brittany celebrates the decorative, the shiny, and the over-the-top. Using humour, text, and lavish materials like glitter, faux fur, and velvet, she transforms everyday objects and spaces into immersive, kitschy wonderlands that challenge societal expectations. For Brittany, frivolity isn’t just about surface-level indulgence—it’s a way of reshaping the world, creating spaces where hardship and frustration don’t just exist but are adorned, exaggerated, and even celebrated. Her work invites us to find joy in excess, embrace the absurdity of hardship, and see art as a way to navigate the chaos of modern life. |
