BIO

Waikato based artist Gaen is both a geometric abstractionist and landscape artist, who aims to capture nature's splendour through his painted works.
Working in acrylic on board and canvas, Gaen uses landscape photography as a start point. He sources palettes from specific regions of his photographs before systematically reducing the scene to its minimalist quintessence, drawing on the cubist tradition of deconstructing and reassembling form to reveal its essential structure. Having travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand, Gaen finds inspiration in the untamed beauty of the country's vast and often barren landscapes. Those moments at dawn and dusk, when the play of light and shadow transforms the mountains and lands into a visual symphony, have become the signature of his artistic vision. While the artist has devoted considerable time to the South Island, where nature's drama unfolds in spectacular fashion, he has also drawn inspiration from many of the world's greatest landscape attractions. This global perspective adds depth to his artistic range. Gaen's work can be found in private collections throughout New Zealand and internationally. |
