Jiajia Cui
Auckland based artist Jiajia Cui creates ceramic works that combine figurative imagery with organic sculptural form.
From delicate evocative portraits to whimsical animal imagery, drawn narratives travel around each vessel encouraging the viewer to appreciate the pieces from all sides. Hand building techniques enable the artist to craft intriguing one-off forms that playfully interplay with the depicted imagery. Jiajia draws on a foundation in graphite drawing as well as oil painting, these mediums come to influence her approach to sculpture. Black Door Gallery is pleased to exclusively showcase the artist's Black Bird sculptural series. The title of this body of work derives from a quote from an influential novel, "Fly, black bird, fly…" As the artist describes: "Black birds, often associated with mystery and the spiritual realm due to their dark color and elusive nature, embody qualities of wisdom and cunning, much like the crow. This imagery deeply resonated with me, influencing subsequent series of portraits on ceramics." Jiajia was born and raised in Shanghai, China where she developed her passion for art. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Art Education. In 2003, her family embarked on a new chapter by immigrating to New Zealand. She has since completed a Fine Art course at AUT and produces her sculptural works from her home studio in Auckland. |
