Keith Thomas captures the delicate interplay of memory, light, and land. |
With decades of experience, Keith Thomas paints Aotearoa’s landscapes, capturing the shifting interplay of land, light, and atmosphere in oil on canvas.
Working from his own photographs taken at the striking sites he visits, he paints with memory in mind—recalling the sensation of walking a hill, swimming in a bay, or watching the horizon shift with passing clouds. Each canvas balances strong composition with the subtle hues of time, place, and season. Thomas grew up in Papakura on the edge of farmland, where a love of the outdoors was nurtured through family fishing trips and summers camping by the coast. Surfing as a teenager deepened this connection, sparking a lifelong habit of exploring New Zealand’s landscapes. Over the past fifty years, he has travelled widely across the North Island, returning again and again to photograph its most striking places. Through painting, Thomas seeks to distill these experiences into moments of beauty and recognition, offering viewers a vivid sense of Aotearoa’s treasured land and light. |
