Paul Herbert shapes clay into organic forms that echo the curves of land, body, and nature. |
Auckland-based artist Paul Herbert creates organic ceramic sculptures that evoke the shapes and textures of the world around us.
Using coiling and other hand building techniques, he forms works that subtlety suggest the human figure, bird-like shapes, or the undulating lines of landscapes. Bands of clay lead the eye across each piece, creating movement and rhythm within simple, largely unglazed forms, often marbled or textured to reflect the earth from which they are made. Herbert's forms balance chance and control, each piece an exploration between clay and the hands of the maker. |
