CLAIRE JENSEN
Claire Jensen creates sculptural works that celebrate New Zealand flora and fauna, transforming her inspiration into objects of devotion. Her pieces represent what is precious to our national identity.
Native bird feathers have become a signature motif for the artist, she replicates the fine details, iridescent colour ways and textures, capturing the spirit of birds such as Kaka, Kererū and Kōtare in carved timber- preserved for our ongoing contemplation. Jensen focuses on the quality crafting of materials using predominantly manual processes, as the artist describes "such techniques allows an experience of intimacy with the piece and harken back to creative methods used in the past". Jensen is concerned with environmentalism, using recycled resources and crafting with sustainable conscience. Stylistic influences are found for the artist in Modernist design, The Arts and Crafts Movement, Scandinavian and Japanese craftsmanship and the art of antiquity. |
