Christchurch based artist David Thomas has become recognised for his playful cast acrylic sculptures, transforming familiar treats into contemporary artworks that explore colour, light, and nostalgia.
Working with the unique qualities of acrylic, Thomas captures the transparency, vibrancy, and glossy finish of his subjects with remarkable precision. His ice cream series draws inspiration from vintage Tip Top advertising and the simple pleasures of a classic Kiwi summer. Works such as Oops and Darn It capture fleeting moments of childhood - an ice cream slipping from its cone, a colourful puddle forming, and a small moment of sweet disappointment preserved in sculptural form. Through meticulous craftsmanship and a distinctive sense of humour, Thomas elevates everyday experiences into engaging artworks that are playful, surprising and enduring. |
