South Island-based artist Jamie Stewart is known for capturing the distinctive light, weather, and landforms of Fiordland and Western Southland. These vast, shifting landscapes—defined by scale, rain, and constantly changing atmosphere—have remained a central focus of his practice for over a decade.
Working in oil on canvas, Stewart builds his works through multiple layers of glaze, sometimes applying up to 40 layers to achieve depth, luminosity, and atmospheric richness. This slow, considered process allows the landscape to emerge gradually, echoing the way these environments reveal themselves in real time.
