jemma ennis
Auckland based artist Jemma Ennis creates fragmented, abstracted and pixelated images that lead us to reflect on the role of digitalsation in our visual world.
Her painting process involves the conscious discarding of the finer details of her subject, manipulating the image and putting it back together in a way that becomes almost unrecognisable. As the artist describes: "For example, when you zoom into a digital image, it becomes abstract and pixelated, then zoom out, and the image reveals itself." The work captures that image at the midway point when the image is no longer unified, and representative but a series of fragmented geometric shapes held together by commonalities such as colour and form. The end result is a reassembled image, a kind of digital collage that recalls the cubist movement. The floral still life has long been re-interpreted by artists, here Jemma Ennis offers a fresh approach the genre. Jemma Ennis draws on a background in Graphic Design, this training and practise gives the artist a fluency in the creation of strong compositions, geometric shapes and luscious colour palettes. Jemma Ennis has work in private collections across New Zealand and overseas, and has work in the Wallace Arts Trust Collection. |
