John Toomer
John Toomer is a well-established Otago based artist who has been painting professionally for over 30 years. Painting in both oil and acrylic, Toomer's work depicts scenes of Otago and surrounding Southern Regions. His current style is described as 'contemporary realism' and the subject matter features still life subjects; old and run down buildings consisting of either homesteads, country stores, churches or railway stations.
Toomer's work is renowned for its high level of detail and meticulous rendering. His pieces offer a dramatic interplay of stark settings and serene moods intensified by his expressive handling of light and shadow. He has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s premier artists of old buildings, buildings in landscapes and painter of dark and stormy skies. His techniques imbue humble rural buildings and scenes with an iconic status. Toomer is a self-taught artist who has dedicated many years to perfecting his fine art. He has held nine highly successful solo exhibitions, seven being sellouts. He has also won numerous art awards over the years and has the distinction of winning People’s Choice awards in various exhibitions around the South Island, no less than 14 times. Toomer's work is included in many private and corporate collections in New Zealand and internationally. He is a past President and Life Member of the Otago Art Society. |
