Auckland based artist Julie Moselen creates metal-crafted sculptures that explore the relationship between light and space. Ranging from sinuous and fluid, to monumental and totemic, Moselen has a strong visual language and style. Moselen's works project stillness and contemplation and offer a moment of quiet and repose.
The abstracted forms in the work evoke an energy and universalism, drawn from her conceptual interest and research in the forms and symbolism of ancient pagan sites, stone circles and burial chambers. As the artist describes: "My work is simple and elegant in form, adhering to mathematical principles found throughout the natural world, inspired by the belief system of ancient cultures."
Surface treatment is carefully considered to enhance the inherent qualities of the materials used, whether it be subtle or of great contrast. For example, the use of gold leaf provides a lustrous off-set to the corten steel.
Beyond indoor works, Moselen has demonstrated an ability to create works of scale for exhibitions such as Sculpture on the Gulf and large scale private client sculpture garden briefs.
