Kaye McGarva is an award-winning New Zealand artist whose paintings are masterful, illusionary works that invite a closer look. Blurring the boundaries between abstraction and representation, two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, and photography and painting, her work is recognized for its distinctive exploration of perception, illusion, and the embodied nature of vision.
Without explicit reference to a specific subject or scale, McGarva’s paintings of shadowy creases possess an uncanny aspect that gently holds and draws the viewer in. Entirely hand-painted, her pieces are built with a meticulous control of tone and detail to create a calm, convincing sense of depth. They can suggest the tactile qualities of folded fabric or sweeping landscapes seen from above, with delicate undulations of light and shadow moving across the surface.
