Kaye McGarva
Kaye McGarva’s paintings of shadowy creases are explorations into illusion, perception and the embodied nature of vision. Her paintings can be said to blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation, 2D and 3D, photography and painting. Without reference to subject or scale, McGarva’s paintings have a seemingly uncanny aspect which draws the viewer in. She
sees the viewer’s engagement and speculation on what they are seeing as an integral part to completing the artwork. Kaye McGarva graduated from Ideaschool in 2014 as Top Research Student. She has been a finalist in the National Contemporary Art Awards, Parkin Drawing Prize, Wallace Art Awards, Molly Morpeth Canaday Award and Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award. Her home and studio are in nestled into the side of Te Mata Peak, the elevated position and distant vistas feed into her art practice directly and indirectly. |
Kaye McGarva creates large scale contemporary paintings with a focus on perception. |
