Lauryne Hart
Lauryne Hart is an Auckland based painter who produces strikingly colourful figurative works, which explore sociological perspectives.
Colour is Hart's signature- her works are bright and joyful. The surface of Hart's paintings are ‘texture-less’ and ‘pattern-less’, relying on the boldness of taking her colours straight from the tube. The colour effects used in her work are further enhanced by the use of contrasting black line work, which defines and enhances the colour regions. The use of vibrant palettes is important to the artist’s core theme of “Colour in Life”; colour becomes symbolic of the commonalities, differences and fascinating connections between people. Hart’s canvases are carefully populated with figures that draw the viewer in with their unique personalities and narratives. While each figure offers a snapshot into a way of being, the way in which the individual narratives are threaded together is perhaps most compelling. The figures are often situated in non-descript environments, giving them a timeless quality. Hart often works to a large scale of up to 4 metres, to create these pieces she uses a lift to travel up and down her canvas. She works layer by layer, often coming back and revising the same section multiple times, working colour over charcoal under-drawings. These pieces pose a significant challenge in creating complex yet harmonious compositions that can be enjoyed up close and at a distance. Hart has received numerous awards for her work including being named a Finalist for the Asia Pacific Clifton Art Awards and being selected for the International Palm Art Awards in Leipzig. Her work has been published in the 2017 and 2014 NZ Art Calendar published by Blackfish Publishing, New Zealand, State of the Art – Artist’s Book Volume IV, 2016, Published by Galeria Aberta, Portugal, Who’s who in Visual Arts 2014, Published by Goette, Germany, and the Kiwi Diary 2013, Published by Freda Wells, New Zealand. Hart’s work has also been documented on the television show Colour in your life, season 12, episode 8. |
"I try to realise the commonalities rather than the differences in the cultures that I see around me. This gives me continued inspiration to show the oneness we experience despite our differences." - Lauryne Hart |
