Neala Glass
Neala Glass is an Auckland based artist who works with drawing and printmaking processes. Characterised by a monochromatic palette, her work features delicate surface details, subtle tonal variations and compelling compositions that utilise the potential of negative space.
Through her figurative work, Glass examines the intricacies of the human condition, often with a deeper focus on psychology. The figure pose is a means to communicate narrative, mood, emotion and tension. These figures are simultaneously realistic and metaphoric; both believable subjects in themselves and vehicles for symbolism and broader narratives. As the artist describes "I hope the viewer is drawn in by the realism of the piece and then is compelled to contemplate the more universal emotion or narrative communicated through the figure". Glass' drawings on canvas are rendered in charcoal, pastel and graphite with technical precision; while her works on paper are rendered in ink applied with a looser approach. Neala Glass gained her BA/BFA from the University of Auckland/ Elam School of Fine Arts specialising in Printmaking, Art History and Psychology. Graduating top of her class she went on to exhibit her work in galleries predominately around New Zealand but also in international printmaking galleries. Glass has won awards and residency opportunities for her monotype printmaking. |
