Rae West produces luminous contemporary abstract paintings that explore the physical and expressive possibilities of paint, resin, ink, and gold leaf. Working in layered pours and fluid gestures, her practice embraces chance, flow, and material response, allowing works to emerge through process rather than pre-determined image.
Her paintings are defined by translucent depth and kinetic movement—pigment and resin shifting, merging, and separating to create surfaces that feel alive with light and atmosphere. Gold leaf sits beneath the layers, enhancing light, depth, and vibration. Moving away from representational imagery, West’s current work is abstract, focused on sensation, intuition, and the interplay between control and spontaneity. The result is work that feels immersive, sensual, and constantly in motion. Rae West’s X series has become well-known for its distinct and distilled symbolic language. The “X” functions as a universal mark of connection, transformation, and transcendence. Reduced to its most elemental form, the X carries layered readings—love, the kiss, encounter, crossing, and change; while also operating as a visual anchor within fields of luminous abstraction. In its pairing with the O, it becomes a pared-back expression of union and exchange, holding expansive emotional and cultural meaning within a simple, resonant gesture.
