Rozi Demant

Auckland based artist Rozi Demant creates exquisitely detailed surrealist style portraits. Her works typically feature female subjects paired with symbolic motifs which enhance the narrative of the work. 

Connections to artists such as Dali can be seen in the work through references to rolling Catalan mountain backdrops. Common symbols include jewellery, dragonflies, cats and hummingbirds. Demant staged her first show exhibition at just 17 and achieved 5 sell-out solo exhibitions before the age of 24. Demant has work held in private collections through New Zealand.

ROZI DEMANT | MERRY GO ROUND

Auckland-based artist Rozi Demant’s new painting Merry Go Round, takes a bold and imaginative leap into the surreal, using the carnival carousel as a powerful metaphor for the cyclical nature of existence.

Set against a vast, dreamlike landscape, the work features the undulating mountains and soft, sweeping skies that are signature elements of Demant’s practice, evoking the Catalan vistas that inspired surrealist giants like Salvador Dalí.

In Merry Go Round, the carousel transforms into a stage for a procession of fantastical animals—each embodying a symbolic representation of different states of being. As they circle in eternal motion, these creatures evoke themes of innocence, curiosity, entrapment, and liberation, continuing Demant’s exploration of how animal forms mirror the complexities of human experience. Vibrant birds and enchanting creatures become a visual language through which the artist addresses both the whimsical and profound aspects of life.

True to Demant’s signature style, the work is richly detailed, with metallic highlights and intricate textures that lend the piece an air of opulence and ethereal beauty. The soft surrealist references—blending reality with dreamlike fantasy—invite the viewer to reflect deeply on themes of time, identity, and personal transformation.
