Sofia Athineou

Sofia Athineou is an Auckland based mixed-media artist with an emphasis in glass. Her work explores organic forms that reference elemental forces such as wind, fire and water. Formally her works are optic and lyrical and utilise the vibrant possibilities of coloured cast glass. 

Athineou's cast glass forms are at times abstract, presenting flowing forms and pulsing shapes that communicate a sense of energy. At other times the works are more representational, reminiscent of windswept trees, root systems or kelp. As the artist describes: "My inspiration comes from nature, my life, my relationships with others and my surroundings. We are all connected. I live in the bush, a magical place full of life. Full of amazing color combinations and shapes."
 
Athineou works in a range of sizes, from smaller collectible pieces through to large scale outdoor sculptures and installations. She exhibits in major sculpture events in New Zealand and has work in private collections throughout the country.
