michael afon
Michael Afon is an Auckland based sculptor and carpenter who creates technical and compelling wall sculptures in timber. Finessed in techniques of carving and joinery, Afon uses these skills to create optic woven wall panels.
Afon's recent works explore 'woven' techniques in timber, on first look one might interpret these pieces to be made from panels of timber physically woven and plaited together, but in fact the pieces are carefully carved to create the illusion. These pieces come to reference traditional Pacific and Māori art forms whereby materials such as flax were woven into items such as baskets, fishing nets and other art forms. Each artwork is carved in beautiful pieces of timber selected for their colour and texture and finished with high quality bronze plated brass details. Afon's works sit at the intersection of art and design and the artist works to brief taking on custom orders and commissions. Afon draws on a background in commercial carpentry and bespoke high end joinery. He is assisted by his son Lev Afon who shares in his passion for creating exquisitely crafted artworks. |
